My husband and I love this place. The food is delicious, and the margaritas are strong. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. The ambiance is a little old school, but considering the low price of the food completely acceptable. We have both eaten in and carried out. I believe the restaurant also delivers.

Don't waste your money this place sucks. I ordered Gorditas, shrimp soup, steak tortas and oysters which were all flavorless. The food took forever to come at least 40 minutes to come that does not include how long the drinks took. It was not busy only 1 other couple there. Terrible food

The tacos were definitely tasty. Kind of small, but they put a lot of cheese and the flavor was good. One thing I did not like is that they gave salsa instead of red sauce. Nothing incredibly impressive about the place, but not bad.

While I like the food, when I called to place an order for delivery (their menu says they do) I was told they don't deliver and got hung up on.

I'm gonna be honest with you. The exterior makes you question why the parking was set up the way it is but anyway... The restaurant is decent. The food is good. I especially enjoy their caldos and menudos on the weekends. I have a problem though. Their tacos are really small compared to what other restaurants are offering in size and the prices are too expensive. I don't know but for what they're offering it just seems like too much. Then unlike the majority of Mexican Food establishments, you get charged for your chips and salsa. I don't know, but it kind of gives the impression that they're money hungry. Hmm

Had it once, never going there again. Sad part is , i liked my food but the service was so awful. There were 5 of us and the only table in the place. The waitress put two kinds of salsas on our table and asked if we wanted chips, we said yes. My friend asked for just cheese and onion on her tacos and asked for the melted cheese w the tortillas ( dont know the real name of it lol ) . Our food came and her cheese plate never came ! She didnt ask us if we were ok or needed refills.. Again we were the only table in there till we were almost done , another two parties came in. Our bill never came so we had to go up to the register to pay, thats when we found out they charged us for the chips lol and .75 for cheese on the tacos which is crazy !! She had the cheese plate on the bill and didnt even realize she didnt put it in ?!?!?! What??? Im not a cheap tipper but i do believe you get the tip you deserve and her tip was minimal !!! On top of that the music being played over the speakers was VERY loud and it was SO hot i was sweating... Never again!

I have eaten here on and off over the years. The quality goes back and forth. Their tacos are good but anything fancier is hit and miss. Please stop putting oranges in the to-go containers. It ruins the flavor of the food. The chips and salsa are great. The prices are pretty good. Three steak tacos with rice and beans for $6.99. Love it. They are a simple, delicious restaurant. Are you looking for frills? Fusion? Do not come here. This is a comfort food place located in your hometown.

This place fell off a long time ago. I don't know if they have a different chef or what. But the meat doesn't taste as good anymore. I used to live their steak, but not anymore.

Had ground beef enchiladas to go and the dish was delicious. The salsa verde and salsa roja was the best I've had. Perfectly spicy, flavorful and chunky not watery.

This place is not very good. Their tacos are small and the tortillas are rubbery and wet. I like the fact that they have a pretty large menu and I -do- enjoy the fact that they offer chorizo tacos. This are is filled with Mexican restaurants. There are way better places you can go.

About an a enrage taqueria. A good and quick breakfast is about all I can ask for and this place didnt disappoint. A great small family atmosphere and good eats with enough seating for a small rush. Nothing to complain about and enjoyed myself as usual for a small place that is modest and good.

Yup food was pretty good a year ago and then the last 3 times I've been there I found fat in my steak burrito which turned me off. Staff is nice but food needs a lot if improvement

I did not like the food here. It was over cooked, too crispy, and cold. Also, I felt like it was over priced. On the menu everything seemed fine, but when I got the bill I was not happy.

First time eating here. Got my usual steak tacos with white cheese and some green salsa Verde. I gave it 3 stars because it has a big selection of food. The steak TOCs were a little dry and a little fat as well. It wasn't terrible but I have a standard taco place I go to to put up against other places. Flavor is something that is a little lacking. I will go back 2 more times to make a more solid review for I hate writing a single review about a place and have people base it off that single review.

Before today, I last came here about 8 years ago. Though I was not very fond of it then, I decided to give it another chance to see if there was any improvement. Especially since they may have changed ownership since the last time I was here. I could be wrong, who knows? I don't pay attention to a lot of things. Well, this place still has some issues. Let me start with the chips and salsa. I've been spoiled by the better places that give me warm chips and fresh salsa. La Carreta gave me neither. The "restaurant style" chips were right out of a bag, and the salsas were cold and obviously pulled right out of a refrigerator. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I cannot stand eating cold salsa. Room temperature would have been fine. But that would only help to an extent. The red salsa was watery and weak, were as the salsa verde was very hot (spicy). Normally I love hot/spicy salsa, as long as there are some other flavors to it. Some garlic maybe? Salt? Onion? Anything besides just the hottest part of the pepper. A rough start to the meal. Onto my steak burrito with sides of rice and beans. Right off the bat, I noticed the flour tortilla looked old. Like the ones at home I usually throw away after having them for too long. Since there wasn't any discoloration, I consumed. Not a bad burrito, but not great. The rice was pretty bland. Good Mexican rice usually has some kind of vegetables in it. Apparently this place thinks otherwise. The beans were okay. A very mediocre meal. Good thing it was slightly under $10. La Carreta has an impressive menu. They also have a full bar, and accept credit cards ($10 minimum). Service is pretty good also. But despite these things, they need to work on the quality and freshness of the food. Much room to improve.

I was not too thrilled about this place who overcooked the meat and greased up the dough. I agree with other reviewers about the chips and salsa which were nothing special. I ordered beef tongue taco, pork taco, and gorditas with steak. Both pork taco and gorditas were greasy. The meat was overcooked so there were dry. This is my first time to try beef tongue taco which was actually better than the other two. I was not too happy with the cleanness and overall appearance of this restaurant neither. The service was fine.

Stopped here one Saturday for an early dinner. We felt a little bit out of place - all the other patrons seemed to be regulars and I felt that we were a little bit neglected. I agree with Mark G about the salsa. I will not touch cold salsa. It's just not very appealing... The food was decent and portions were generous. Overall, not a bad experience, but I have definitely had better.

I stopped by because I live in the neighborhood, and I believe it was a great experience! For one, I was very hungry, so the food arriving fast was a big plus! When we got the food, I got the burrito at one time then tacos at my second time, and they were both amazing. Never had a bad experience here!

Good enough to come back and recommend to others. The pork and Steak tacos were very good. Chips/Salsa were average. Tough to pass up Romano's across the street to come here though. Simple Taqueria, simple review!

The salsa taste bad. The food is not fresh the meat needs more seasoning otherwise sometimes the tacos are good and they need a good cook

My attraction to, and experience of, quality Mexican dining will be pitfall to places like La Carreta. Though I mildy enjoyed my experience here, I didn't leave with much of an impression. The service, from the start, was what I would label as "uncomfortable". Not that the waitress was uncomfortable, but they she made me uncomfortable. She seen me come in and continued to let me stand in the doorway, politely waiting to be seated, for a good 10 minutes, until she had me seat myself. It was almost like she was unwelcoming or really just had no desire for my business, I suppose. Anyway, the menu seems reall good actually. Pretty wide variety, and the descriptions made everything sound like they'd be great. I settled for a chorizo y juevos torta (sausage & eggs sandwich) which comes with tomatoes, lettuce, avocado, and sour cream, plus a side of rice and beans since I ordered the meal. The sandwich had been drowned in sour cream; I'm a fan of sour cream, but not when it's molesting my sandwich. The beans were good; at that point I'd expected them to come cold but they tasted fine, as did the rice (nothing extraordinary). The bill was very cheap, which was a plus. There's a very small parking lot in the back of the restaurant, enough for maybe 10-12 cars. Again, I think I've spoiled myself by endulging in some very fine Mexican dining, and this turned out to be more like the McDonald's or Denny's of Mexican dining, for lack of a better analogy.

I've enjoyed all my foodsperiences at La Carreta. I like the diner feeling; it's Mexican food, but in a diner! I don't know, that just gets me. Anyways, the food was all really good. I make sure to order the tacos every time as it seems like their specialty - at least, when comparing the quality of the tacos to the other stuff I've ordered. I guess it IS a taqueria. I highly recommend the chorizo tacos and the pork tacos, and watch out for the guacamole: it's spicier than I expected, and 10 chips after digging into it my mouth was on fire. If you're in or around Franklin Park you might as well go to La Carreta. The city is 1/3 Mexican and it's at places like this where you get to experience what that really means for your tastebuds.

My wife and I stopped in for a bite and I am certainly glad I did. I am assuming there have been some changes at this place since Mark was there. The salsa for the chips was cold, which from my experience is usually served that way. My wife and I both ordered their Flautas. I ordered a taco with picadillo, beans, and rice for our son. All I can say about this place is HAND MADE TORTILLAS! My wife kept saying the flauta was "fresh tasting" and not like the usual deep fried plate you feel guilty about eating. I had the beef flauta and was very happy with my meal. IT was served with beans, rice, and the usual tomato, lettuce, and lime wedge. Overall, two flautas dinners, one beef taco, a bottle of Coke (glass bottle from Mexico), and a can of Fanta came to 30 and some change including a six dollar tip.

had a fanTASTIC tamale, spot on avocado tacos, and a really lovely horchata. the house salsa is delicious and spicy as heck. the helpful young lady at the register walked me through the mexican candy assortment (dulches) which i was previously not brave enough to try. WOW sweet potato candy, where have you been all my life. the rice *is* completely bland, like eating tomato flavored play-doh. time to call grandma and weasel that recipe out of her. maybe barter a little, escort her to mass for 6 months. get the GOOD recipe. the dining area itself is a david-lynchy diner style that appears to have sprung right out of the early seventies, adorned with cattle horns, serapes, and a full bar with a nice tequila selection. love that too.

Came here last night 8/28/11. I had 2 Tacos / 1 Quesedilla w/Rice & Beans dinner and my gf had a Steak Taco and Pork Tamal. If I were to go back I definitely prefer the Chicken filling over the Steak. Overall, everything was either average or above average. Chips and Salsa were nothing special. In short - cheap grub that comes out quick and doesn't disappoint. We'll be back.

This was the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten. For starters the salsa was sweet and tasted like tomato paste. They brought a second salsa that looked like green mustard and tasted like jalapeno paste. We had a burrito and a combination plate that were both cooked in the sweet pastey salsa. A Mexican lean cuisine tastes better! The only good point was that the place was empty and we were out of there in 20 minutes. Avoid at all costs.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
